Teresa’s Trinkets & Gifts by Teresa Cunningham

How did you get started making crafts?

I am asked this very question quite often at times. On that note I will tell everyone the answer. My interest in crafting started when I was 8 years of age. This is when I started learning Sewing and Crochet. My mom got me going on sewing, then a neighbor taught me what she knows about sewing & crochet plus I took a class in high school to learn more about these two crafts. However before taking that class in high school I kept practicing so I had a head start. As I became better at crochet the same neighbor paid me to make an afghan for her as she did not have the time to make it herself. If I remember correctly I was 10 years old.

Then just a few years ago when working at the grocery store just up the street from my house, I started noticing various craft items my customers had with them and that got me to thinking I can make those for a little extra spending money. Approximately one year later I became sick and could no longer work at a job I am qualified for. So this is when I decided to turn my love of doing crafts into my job. It takes a lot of time to get a home based business going and is also a good way to learn new things. I am always looking for newer methods in making things, and looking to learn how to make the few crafts I do not know yet. I do also have my own website called Teresa’s Trinkets & Gifts and the following is the address to the website. www.teresastrinkets.com

I invite you to come and look around and if you have any questions email me and I will do my best to answer them. Thank you for taking the time to stop and read this article and hope to see you soon.

My First Venture into Weaving

I know, everyone is on pins and needles to find out how my adventure is going in learning to weave.  When I left off last month, I had gotten my loom all set.    So happy I was to be able to settle down and start my weaving.  After the many hours just setting it up, I was more than ready.  Since this was my first piece, I chose a simple plain weave.  Basically, a 1 & 3, 2 & 4, 1 & 2, 3 & 4.  For the ones who don’t understand this, it’s simple.  I have a 4 harness table loom with four levers that hold my heddles.  The above figures show which levers I push to raise what heddles to give me the pattern I want.  After I push the levers down, I take my shuttle, which is wound with yarn, and push it from one side to the other.  Release the levers, raise the other levers, and push it back through.  Oh, Yeah!  I am weaving now. Happy Happy Joy Joy!!

Remember, I was making 4 placemats.  Please note the word “was” there. I have no idea what happened, where I went wrong, or how I did it.  About halfway into my weaving, I noticed something was not quite right.  The width was just not wide enough for a placemat.  But I pressed on, determined to make “something” of this.  I was weaving and that was all that mattered. Finally about a foot from the end of my rope, so to speak, I finally gave up. Lol.  I proceeded to remove the piece from the loom to see what I had.

I have a lovely little 50” table runner that is somewhere around 9” wide. I say somewhere, since it depends upon where you measure.  Towards the end it is more like 8 ½”. Lol.  That’s when the idea for a table runner came to mind.  Lol.

I have pictures if anyone wishes to see them.

I have already embarked on my second piece and can’t wait to see what I am making!
