History of Barbie

Ruth Handler, Barbie's creator, got the idea of A Barbie doll in 1959 when she noticed her daughter Barbara playing with paper dolls and imagining them as college students, cheerleaders, and adults with careers. She realized that dolls on the market at that time were all baby dolls. She thought there was a need for a doll that would let little girls imagine a life other than having babies. Thus the idea for the Barbie doll, the teenage fashion model, was born. Ruth named the doll Barbie, after her daughter. Barbie was introduced at the American Toy Fair in New York City in February of 1959 by Ruth and Elliot Handler, founders of Matte l Toys.
